Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the questions we hear most from new students and parents — from what to wear on day one to how we keep children safe. If anything is not covered here, just get in touch.

Getting Started

Everything you need to know before your first class.

What should I wear to my first class?

Wear comfortable clothes that are easy to move in — something you would be happy exercising in, like a t-shirt and joggers or leggings. Avoid restrictive clothing such as jeans, and remove jewellery before training. You do not need a uniform or any specialist kit to take part in your free trial.

How do I choose the right programme?

Use our programme finder to get a recommendation based on age and what you are looking for. You can also browse the full programme catalogue or check the timetable to see what runs at each venue. If you are unsure, the team is happy to talk it through with you.

What is the youngest age children can start?

Our Dragon Tots programme starts from age 3. It is built specifically for pre-schoolers, using game-based drills to develop balance, listening and coordination in a warm, encouraging environment. Older children move into Junior Dragons and then our 7+ martial arts programmes as they grow.

Do parents need martial arts experience for family classes?

No. Family classes are beginner-friendly and require no prior martial arts experience from parents or children. Everyone is guided through the basics, and you learn together at a pace that suits your family.

What happens after the free trial?

If you enjoy your trial and want to continue, the next step is to let the team know and we will talk you through the joining process for your chosen programme. There is no obligation to decide on the day. You can also contact us or speak directly with your instructor at any point to ask questions before joining.

Training & Safety

How classes work and how we keep everyone safe.

How do you keep children safe in class?

All KRMA instructors, coaches and regular assistants undergo an Enhanced DBS background check before working with students, and our instructors maintain current First Aid certification and safeguarding training. Parents are always welcome to watch classes from our viewing areas. We are recognised under the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts, and any welfare concern can be raised in confidence with our Designated Safeguarding Lead or with independent bodies such as the NSPCC. Full details are on our safeguarding page.

How often should I or my child train?

There is no single rule — the right frequency depends on the programme, your goals and your schedule. We recommend speaking with your instructor and checking the timetable to find a routine that works for you. Consistency matters more than intensity, so a sustainable pattern you can keep up is always better than overcommitting.

Will martial arts help with confidence, focus and behaviour?

Many students develop greater confidence, focus and self-discipline over time through regular practice — these are common benefits we see, particularly in our children's programmes. They are potential developments that come with consistent training rather than guaranteed outcomes, and every individual progresses at their own pace.

Fees, Equipment & Next Steps

Costs, what kit you will need, and where to go next.

How much does it cost and are there membership fees?

Training costs vary by programme, so we do not quote a single price here. The best way to get accurate, current pricing for the programme you are interested in is to look at the programme page or get in touch. You can start with a free trial with no obligation, and we will be upfront about any fees before you commit.

Do I need to buy equipment, and when?

You do not need any equipment to start — just comfortable clothing for your free trial. As you progress, your instructor will confirm the appropriate uniform and any programme-specific protective gear, and advise the right timing for getting it. We do not require everything up front, and your instructor will guide you on what is genuinely needed and when.

Still have questions?

We are happy to talk through anything before you get started — no pressure, no obligation.
